project: backpack
pocket insert
year: 1994
concept:
Backpacks are designed with many compartments of differing
sizes, but when non-rigid items (paperback books,
magazines, papers, and folders) are placed in the largest compartment,
they tend to be pulled downward and curl at the corners to
end up half rolled in the bottom.
The
backpack pocket insert features
eight pockets to organize papers, folders, file folders or magazines,
and one cargo pocket to accommodate any item up to 20 mm thick.
The design has each pocket with a different height so that items
of smaller size do not get lost in deep pockets. A
polycarbonate insert gives the system rigidity, yet can be removed
to allow the pockets to be machine washed. A convenient fold out
leg on the back allows the unit to be easily displayed for access.
The functional prototype is made of durable cordura.
